Coeliac Week

Coeliac Week

15th May 2019

Coeliac disease or celiac disease is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the small intestine. Classic symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as chronic diarrhoea, abdominal distention, malabsorption, loss of appetite and among children failure to grow normally.

Screening for coeliac disease involves a two stage process:
• blood tests to help identify people who may have coeliac disease
• gut biopsy to confirm the diagnosis

If you have coeliac disease, you can eat the following foods, which naturally don't contain gluten:
• most dairy products, such as cheese, butter and milk.
• fruit and vegetables.
• meat and fish (although not breaded or battered)
• potatoes.
• rice and rice noodles.
• gluten-free flours, including rice, corn, soy and potato.

Please contact your GP is you have any concerns
