Breast Mammogram
29th March 2019
BreastCheck is a Government-funded programme that provides free mammograms to eligible women on an area by area basis every two years. BreastCheck is being extended and by the end of 2021, all eligible women aged 50 to 69 will be invited for routine screening. This will be done on a phased basis and will be achieved by inviting women who were aged between 50 and 67, on the 1st January 2019, for mammograms until they reach the age of 69. We appreciate that there will be women aged over 67 who will be disappointed not to be re-called for a mammogram. However, following extensive review, the model chosen for extension is agreed to be the safest and most effective.
If you notice any symptoms or changes in your breasts, or are ever worried about any breast problem and have not received a BreastCheck appointment, you should go and see your GP (family doctor) immediately.
The aim of BreastCheck is to reduce deaths from breast cancer by finding and treating the disease at an early stage. BreastCheck encourages all women who receive an invitation to attend their appointment. Women who have any concerns regarding their appointment can contact BreastCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55. BreastCheck encourages women to check they are on the BreastCheck register and their details are correct.
