Coeliac disease is an disorder where people react to the gluten contained in wheat, barley and rye. The condition is treated with a gluten free diet. One per cent of the world population have coeliac disease. If you have a first degree family member (mother, father, sibling or child) with coeliac disease you have a one in ten chance of developing coeliac disease. To diagnose coeliac disease you have to be on a gluten containing diet. A blood test is available at the practice to test for coeliac disease. Please ask about testing if you feel that you may have coeliac disease. Our Doctors at Elmwood would be happy to discuss this further.
